The Murray River is more than just a breathtaking natural wonder; it holds deep cultural significance for the Traditional Owners who have lived along its banks for thousands of years. Recognizing this, Parks Victoria has taken great care in ensuring that development along the Murray River Adventure Trail is done with respect for the region’s rich Indigenous history.
As part of this effort, Barapa, along with Dan, and Trent have been working closely with Everick Heritage’s Acko’s team to contribute to the Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Management Plan (ACHMP) for the project. This important work helps identify, document, and protect cultural sites, ensuring that any development aligns with traditional knowledge and heritage values.
What is the ACHMP?
An Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Management Plan (ACHMP) is a crucial step in projects like the Murray River Adventure Trail. It involves surveying the land, consulting with Traditional Owners, and ensuring that significant cultural sites—such as scar trees, middens, or ancient campsites—are identified and preserved.
By working alongside Parks Victoria, Barapa Ltd and Dan, and Trent are playing an essential role in ensuring that the voices of Indigenous communities are heard and respected throughout the planning and construction phases of the project.
The Role of Everick Heritage
Everick Heritage is a leader in cultural heritage management, helping projects navigate heritage legislation while ensuring that Traditional Owners are active participants in the process. Their Acko’s team, working in collaboration with Barapa, Dan, and Trent, brings expertise in archaeological surveys, site preservation, and cultural engagement.
Protecting the Murray’s Cultural Landscape
The Murray River Adventure Trail is an exciting initiative that will allow visitors to explore the river’s beauty while also learning about its Indigenous history. Through partnerships like this one—with Traditional Owners, heritage specialists, and Parks Victoria—there is an opportunity to balance conservation, recreation, and cultural heritage protection.
Looking Ahead
With the ACHMP in place, the Murray River Adventure Trail will not only provide a scenic outdoor experience but also serve as an educational journey, showcasing the deep connection between the land and its First Nations custodians.
