Barapa Ltd Kurrak Rangers together with Elders DEECA staff and Wamba Wamba Rangers conducted important cultural heritage works at Guttrum State Forest, VIC. The event was part of ongoing efforts to rehabilitate and protect Aboriginal registered sites under DECCA’s ACHMP Permit CHP_1211, ensuring all works are respectful safe and in line with cultural protocols.

Caring for Country

The day focused on protecting Country through a range of rehabilitation activities including remediation and repair at burial sites, filling rabbit holes, fumigating rabbit warrens and weed control. Invasive plants such as Tobacco Plant were treated chemically and then removed by hand, helping restore the land to its natural condition. Physical barriers were also placed to prevent vehicle access to sensitive areas ensuring long-term protection of these significant sites.

Community and Collaboration

The event brought together staff Elders and key stakeholders including Kurrak Ranger Juanita ‘Wanda’ Halden, Bainli Galway, CEO Deborah Webster, Elders Chris Webster, Uncle Ron Galway and Elder Dixie Patten alongside DEECA’s Aboriginal staff and Wamba Wamba Rangers. This collaboration created an incredible opportunity for knowledge sharing cultural learning and connection with Country.

A Spiritual Connection

One of the highlights of the day was a smoking ceremony performed by Elder Dixie Pattan, providing a meaningful way to cleanse the land and honour the spirits of Country. Staff and attendees described the experience as “unmatched,” reflecting the deep connection felt when working on ancestral lands. The dedication of the team especially in the heat was remarkable, from heavy soil work to careful plant removal, all completed with respect and care.
